History of Northbrook

Northbrook has a long history of colonization, starting in the 1830s. In 1833, the Potawatomi tribe ceded their land and relocated.

Joel Sterling Sherman bought 159 acres in what is now Northbrook. Soon, land was donated for the first railroad station. By the 1870s, the area was a fairly well-established town.

The town was incorporated in 1901 as Shermerville, but the new name was established in 1923. By the time World War II was over, the area had grown considerably to over 1000 people. By 1960, over 11500 people lived in Northbrook.

Why Northbrook Tree Care is Important

If you live in Northbrook, you probably pride yourself on having a neat, tidy home with a grass lawn and lots of mature trees. You doubtless mow your lawn regularly, but tree care can sometimes be overlooked. However, Northbrook Tree Care is important for a number of reasons:

Protection from Wildlife

You probably value the nearness to nature that Northbrook offers if you’re a resident of this town. It’s bordered by two huge natural areas and waterways, so it should come as no surprise that wildlife sometimes passes through Northbrook.

You surely enjoy visits from songbirds and butterflies, but you may not be as happy to have possums, raccoons, or other animals on your property. Without the proper tree care services, trees can encourage these pests and make it more likely that they will stay.

Stump grinding is essential to remove the stump after trees fall or are removed so that the rotting and hollowed-out stump won't become a nesting area for animals. Tree pruning is important to remove lower branches so animals won't get as much cover from trees and won't feel as comfortable moving through your yard.

Make Your Northbrook Property Look It's Best

Northbrook tree care by a certified arborist can make your property look better than you knew was possible. It takes a good deal of trimming, pruning, and shaping for trees to look good.

One bad cut can ruin a tree's look for the rest of its life. It may seem like a simple matter to trim a tree and keep it in shape, but in fact, it takes a great deal of knowledge and experience to prune trees properly. A quality tree service company will shape your trees so that they are an asset to the look of your property.

Have More Functionality from Your Property

Residents of Northbrook typically enjoy spending time outside, playing ball in the yard, gardening, or just enjoying a nice day. Depending on how trees are trimmed and cared for, they can add to the functionality of your space or take away from it.

Low branches put you at risk of hitting your head as you're playing in the yard. Poor pruning can totally block out sunlight in some areas and allow for too much sun in others, causing yards to grow unevenly.

Tree branches that drop fruit, nuts, or lots of leaves can grow over sidewalks and driveways, making a mess of walking areas and vehicles. With the proper pruning, trees provide pleasant shade, a pleasing aesthetic, and generally make you enjoy your property more.

What Kind of Trees are in Northbrook?

Northbrook is a largely wooded area, with great diversity in the types of trees that grow here. Understanding what trees are native to Illinois, which trees are invasive and potentially destructive, and how to care for or eliminate the trees on your property is absolutely essential for any kind of tree service company that you consider.

You may not realize that one large tree on your property is at risk of falling or breaking limbs on your roof while another tree of the same size is extremely unlikely to pose any danger. However, arborists have a vast wealth of knowledge to help you make educated decisions about tree removal and other choices. Here are just a few of the trees that may be on your property:

  • American Sweetgum. This huge, native tree can be 75 feet high. It has star-shaped leaves that turn brilliant colors in the fall and make this tree a truly striking figure on your landscape. However because of the height, the gummy sap, and the round, spiky seeds, care must be taken in where this tree should be planted and allowed to grow.
  • Maidenhair Tree. This tree is very resilient, able to handle poor soil, drought, and heat. It can reach 100 ft tall and drops yellow flowers, so care must be taken with where it is planted.
  • Nanny Berry. This cute little tree has pretty white flowers that are wonderful for pollinators and fruit that is enjoyed by birds and people alike. It doesn't require much pruning and it only gets to 25 feet high, so as long as you plant it somewhere that the dropping fruit won't cause a problem, this tree is pretty low maintenance.
  • Patriot American Elm. Dutch elm disease is a serious problem for American Elms, so if you want an elm on your property, tree care services will likely recommend that you choose this elm which is resistant to Dutch elm disease.

What to Look for in Tree Service Near Me

As you’re shopping for Northbrook tree care, you will surely face many decisions which can make it difficult for you to determine exactly who is the best provider for tree services. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you pick the right company for your needs:

Experienced in the area. You want tree services from somebody who has worked in the neighborhoods around you and with the kinds of trees that are in your yard.

Long history of success. Choose a company that's been around for a long time so you can be confident they'll be there when you need them in the future.

Credentialed. The company that works on your trees should have certified arborists on staff and the most respected certifications in their industry.

Does other stuff. You probably need more landscape care than just tree services. A company that can provide other services can be a one-stop-shop for outside care.

Listens to what you have to say. All of the experience and credentials in the world won't matter if the company you choose doesn't listen to what you want for your trees.
